OUR SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES

We understand that the choices we make today will impact the future of our planet, oceans and generations to come. As a result, we are committed to continually improving our sustainability and are proud to work with natural, renewable and biodegradable fibres including Vicuña, Cashmere and wool.

We actively reduce our environmental footprint by utilising Scotland's soft, free-flowing water in our processes and using energy from renewable sources wherever possible. We carry out all of our manufacturing processes on-site, minimising our air miles.

In Mongolia, we work with communities to support sustainable practices in Cashmere production, and at home in Scotland we invest in our people, understanding that they are at the very heart of everything we do. We know that today's actions will shape the future, which is why sustainability has always been a part of our story.

As one of the three founding members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, Johnstons of Elgin is committed to restoring Mongolian grasslands, ensuring the well-being of animals, and securing herders' livelihoods.

THE NATURAL CHOICE: CASHMERE & FINE WOOL

Today's fashion industry offers consumers more choice than ever before, but many of these choices come at considerable cost to the environment. Considering the long-term impacts of high-fashion throw-away clothing it's no wonder so many people continue to invest in well made, high-quality products that will stand the test of time. When choosing the fibres of your future wardrobe, cashmere and fine wools are smart choices.

Today the wools we use are amongst the finest in the world and make the most incredibly soft, comfortable and desirable products.

OUR WORK ON CASHMERE SUSTAINABILITY

Johnstons of Elgin is one of three founding members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA), a non-profit international organisation, formed in 2015 to work with the extended cashmere supply chain, from herders to retailers. With a focus on restoring grasslands, ensuring the well-being of animals, and securing herders’ livelihoods, the SFA funds specific programmes in Mongolia to train communities and promote sustainability. Our Chief Executive sits on the SFA board and is an active participant in many SFA initiatives.

MADE IN SCOTLAND

We are proud of our rich Scottish heritage, and all stages of our manufacturing processes continue to take place in our own mills, deep in rural Scotland. The thistle in our "wood cut" logo designed in the 1930's places that commitment to Scottish manufacturing right at the very heart of our identity.

FEWER CHEMICALS

"Vertical" textile manufacturing is where each component of a product is supplied to the next stage in the process within a single location. As Scotland's only vertical mill, we dye, spin, weave and finish all our products on site. As a result, we have absolute control over what goes into our products and what goes out during our processes.

INVESTING IN PEOPLE

People are at the heart of everything we do. In a world where businesses are increasingly office-focused, and processes are more becoming automated, we work hard to attract the right individuals into our hands-on apprenticeship programmes. We share skills passed down through generations, while providing training in cutting-edge technology, to allow our highly skilled craftsmen and women to produce the finest quality products.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Reducing clothing consumption by buying better quality garments and wearing them for longer is the single biggest change we can make to reducing the environmental impact of our wardrobe. Using natural animal fibres with inbuilt antibacterial properties also means less washing and lower temperature washing.
