TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

At Johnstons of Elgin, we have devised our own recruitment, training, and personal development programme, achieving accreditation for our investment in young people and an award for HR excellence. We endeavour to reach our craftspeople of the future as early as possible. Our Schools Interaction Programme helps primary and secondary school children prepare skills for work and offers insight into our business's diverse career opportunities.

FIFTH AND SIXTH-YEAR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM THE AREA SURROUNDING OUR ELGIN MILL VISIT THE SITE EACH YEAR, TAKING PART IN A TOUR AND DECIDING WHICH ASPECTS OF THE BUSINESS ARE OF MOST INTEREST.

WE FACILITATE AN IN-DEPTH VISIT TO ONE DEPARTMENT, FOLLOWED BY AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A MOCK INTERVIEW, BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND PRACTICAL SKILLS FOR FUTURE EMPLOYMENT. WE ALSO HOST LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' VISITS AT OUR HAWICK MILL AND GIVE PRESENTATIONS ON WORK-READY SKILLS.

We are part of the Career Ready Programme, a national programme offering young people work experience, mentorship and masterclasses to help in their transition from education to the workplace. We also provide short internship opportunities for local students and support class projects in chemistry, language and marketing and PR.

Johnstons of Elgin is an accredited Scottish Qualification Agency Assessment Centre, and more than 100 of our employees have qualified through Modern Apprenticeships.

Every one of our team members is charged with constantly improving and updating their skills. We believe this is our most important investment, the foundation of our business success and the springboard to our development in the future. We operate with employee consultative forums across our sites and recognise the Unite Trade Union. Through these forums, employees are consulted on significant issues affecting us all.

We believe in a workplace free from all types of discrimination, including discrimination on the grounds of gender, race and religion.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Our health and safety management systems are certified to the ISO 45001 standard and independently audited. We believe that employee mental health is as important as physical health, so, trained mental health first aiders are available to all of our staff. The first aiders also have access to mental health support where required.

RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE

In 2018, we were awarded the Gold Investors in Young People (IIYP) Good Practice Award, which recognises our commitment to attraction and recruitment of young people, support, development and retention. In 2019, Johnstons of Elgin was named Exemplary Employer of Choice at The cHeRries, an awards ceremony recognising excellence in HR, training and recruitment in Scotland.
