GENERATIONAL STYLING

When it comes to effortless dressing, there is no such thing as a generation gap. Mother and daughter models Lisa Butcher and Oli Donoso demonstrate this perfectly in breathtaking images from our recent Generational Styling photoshoot. Both women channel 1950s Hollywood style in our Timeless Classics; simple, understated layering pieces, made with the world’s finest cashmere fibres.

Guest Creative Director and Stylist Jo Hambro transported Lisa and Oli to a time-gone-by, creating striking looks reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Jo maintains that dressing well is about being comfortable with yourself. 'If you're comfortable in your paws, you can wear anything; you just need to get your proportions right. There’s a moment in life where a miniskirt might not be the answer but its psychological. If you feel good, you can wear anything,' she said.

Model and presenter Lisa agrees that dressing for yourself is more important than chasing passing trends. She explains, 'Seasonal colours aren’t always going to be flattering, you should always dress for you rather than for fashion. There are ways to wear those colours though, tones that are less flattering around the face can be worn lower down on the body or in accessories.  When I was Oli’s age, I was pushing the boundaries of style. Oli has always been more of a classic dresser. My style is more classic now, and we do share clothes, which is great. We have double the wardrobe! She has stolen the odd cashmere jumper from me. That’s her favourite thing in the world, Cashmere.'

Lisa relished the opportunity to work with Jo and with her daughter. 'Jo is a joy to work with. She has a great sense of style, and it was so nice to do 1950s old-world glamour and dress up for the day. Working with my daughter was the cherry on the cake for me. We have worked together before, and I have framed some of the pictures. These will definitely be pictures I will keep too.' The images of Lisa and Oli speak for themselves, with both women radiating beauty in our Timeless Classic knitwear. The considered colours will remain relevant season after season while the fit and fine fibres of these essential layering pieces mean they will look effortlessly stylish on any wearer, of any generation.

Johnston’s of Elgin’s Creative Director Alan Scott revealed that our Timeless Classics make up one of three distinctive platforms for Autumn Winter, which harmonize with one another. He said, ‘Our design team has reworked the Timeless Classics creating contemporary looks in both fine and heavier weight gauges. We have reworked the structural details of our classic styles, moving from a fitted shape to a more relaxed one, and we have added length on the body. The neck trim is deeper to achieve a more modern look.’

Our Classics range has always featured elegant, timeless styles in the most sumptuous, tactile Cashmere. However, previously the waists were more fitted, and the trim detailing slimmer. Our design team looked at our customers’ needs, along with changes in the market, and reimagined the collection for 2020. One thing that remains the same is the fine Cashmere composition. ‘The natural properties of Cashmere are rare, with extreme lightness and warmth, making it the perfect fibre for the luxury connoisseur that not only feels amazing but can make a style statement,’ said Alan.

The circularity of our Timeless Classics adds to their appeal, made with natural, renewable fibres. Our products are made to last, so you can be confident that with a little love and care, your favourite Cashmere pieces can be passed on to the next generation.

Lisa admits she has her eye on our Cashmere V-Neck Jumper in camel from the new collection and is excited to see designs from our ‘Origins’ Autumn Winter collection hit the shelves. ‘I’ve never seen knitwear like it. Johnstons of Elgin has taken patterns you might see in South America and made something that’s really soft and beautiful. I’m really looking forward to these pieces. That’s one of the reasons I like Johnstons of Elgin, they have this incredible fine Cashmere, the best Cashmere in the world, but with this incredible twist.'

These days Lisa lives in the country and is more likely to be found walking her Great Dane than rushing around in London. ‘The things that bring me happiness aren’t the same things that brought me happiness in my 20s,’ she said.

Our Timeless Classics work for both locations. Wardrobe must-haves, for every generation.
