People are at the heart of everything we do. In a world where businesses are increasingly office-focused, and processes are more becoming automated, we work hard to attract the right individuals into our hands-on apprenticeship programmes. We share skills passed down through generations, while providing training in cutting-edge technology, to allow our highly skilled craftsmen and women to produce the finest quality products.
At Johnstons of Elgin, we have devised our own programme of recruitment, training and personal development, achieving accreditation for our investment in young people and an award for HR excellence in the last year. We endeavour to reach our craftspeople of the future as early as possible. Our Schools Interaction Programme works with primary and secondary school children to help them prepare skills for work and to offer an insight into the diverse career opportunities available within our business.
Fifth and sixth-year secondary school students, from the area surrounding our Elgin mill, visit the site each year, taking part in a tour and deciding which aspects of the business are of most interest. We facilitate an in-depth visit to one department, followed by an opportunity to take part in a mock interview, building confidence and practical skills for future employment. At our Hawick site, we host visits from local high school students and give presentations on skills for being work-ready.
